Working with menus

A website’s navigation menu allows users to jump between different sections of your website quickly. Menu items generally link to the most important pages such as Home, Contact Us, Blog, etc.

Introduction #

Creating a menu in WordPress is a straightforward process. To get started, go to your WordPress dashboard and navigate to the Menus item. You can create a new menu by clicking on the Create a new menu link. Give your menu a name and click on the Create Menu button.

Once you’ve created your menu, you can start adding items to it. You can add pages, categories, custom links, or even specific post types. WordPress provides a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface, allowing you to arrange the menu items in the desired order. You can also create submenus by dragging the items slightly to the right, creating a nested structure.

How to use and create a menu #

To customize the default menu of your website, you have to enter the WordPress dashboard, click on Menus. The first thing you need to do is to give the menu a name, and then click the Create Menu button.

To place a menu on your website, WordPress provides various locations, depending on your theme. Common locations include the header, footer, sidebar, or mobile menu. You will see Menu Setting sections, but that does not affect your Kepler template.

After creating it, you may start adding your menu items. All your website’s categories, posts, and pages are gathered in the left column, and from there, you can simply add them to your custom menus in just a few clicks.

First of all, you need to click on Pages and View All. Select all the pages that you want to appear in your menu (use the checkboxes next to the pages’ names).

We selected all of them for the test, but you should use only the ones you need.

After selecting the menu items, you might want to switch their order. All you have to do is drag and drop them in the desired location. This is how you’re going to organize your custom menus.

Apart from standard menus, you can also create sub-menus. Simply drag a menu item to the right of another menu item. Like so:

How to delete and rename menu items #

To delete items from the custom menu, click on each page’s small arrow to the right. You’ll see a few details about that page and the Remove button down below. Click on it, and that item will be deleted.

Do the same to rename the menu items. Click on their current name and change it.

How to add custom links to your menu #

All you need to do is click on Custom Links in the left column, and at this point, you can add whatever link you want to your menu. Each link needs a URL (its unique web address), and the Link Text (the name of the link in the menu). Click Add to Menu, and you’re done.

Those custom links are useful for those cases where you want to link to a page that was not listed in the left column, like a whole external website, for example.

How to update menu’s location #

In the images below you can see the Kepler template menu locations. To update menu items you can use the Menus from WordPress admin described previously. But if you want to change style of menus, you must use Elementor page builder. Most of the menus are located in the header and footer.

How to style them please check these articles.
